If only she’d discovered before now she could bring him to heel with the simple threat of drowning—much more efficient than blasting him with flurries. “What’s the magic word?”
A tense silence followed his low growl. After what seemed like an eternity, he gritted out, “Please help me back to shore.”
Goosebumps prickled her nape. Every survival instinct foreboded imminent danger, but she’d never had it in her to cause actual harm. Less than an hour ago, he’d numbered among the handful of people she trusted. Despite the suffocating rage, she didn’t and could never put his life in peril. She’d let him into her small circle of friends, allowed their complicated relationship a permanent spot on her shortlist of life-changing encounters, and no amount of anger could sever the bond between them.
But she had no plans to let him off the hook just yet. Closing her eyes, she visualized the frozen stream as a giant wave catapulting him back to shore. She lifted her lids in time to catch his butt hitting the water. He sank an inch before the slush crested, propelling him through the air.
Toppling face-forward, he landed a foot from her toes. Over two hundred pounds of solid muscle combined with momentum to create a man-shaped dent in the thick snow. The full moon’s light and her own luminescence bounced off surrounding expanses of silver, giving her a clear view of the large wet blotch over his very attractive behind.
She giggled.
He lifted his head. Downy puffs decorated his short-cropped ebony hair and dappled his five o’ clock shadow. Two white clumps capped the tips of his ears. Shaking his head and shoulders, he launched icy debris in all directions.
A suppressed guffaw erupted through her nose.
“That,” he hissed, “wasn’t funny.”

Desna studied the male shifter next to her as she climbed toward higher ground. He wasn’t. Desna could see his brown eyes shifting back and forth as he swept his gaze over the terrain. He was always protective of her, but he was more alert than ever since this was the breeding season. Animal passions ran high at this time of year.
Except for the muffled crunch of snow beneath Karpok’s feet, he was absolutely silent—a predator who had mastered the art of stealth. Frost bears were fierce, magnificent creatures, which was why the father of their people had chosen to merge his spirit with the animal. Since then, his descendants, the Children of Nanook, had been able to shift between forms. They could change from men and women to the ferocious white bears and then back again as they chose.
Karpok was one of the strongest shifters Desna had ever known. Even though she transformed into a sizeable bear herself, he dwarfed her. He was double her weight and taller than some of the clawless villagers who lived beyond the mountains. Like her, he had large feet to help him tread across the ice, and his sharp claws gave him better traction. Even his thick fur couldn’t disguise the sheer power in his stocky legs. He smelled of male and power, of sea salt and ice and endless skies.
She drew a deep breath and reveled in his scent. The air that filled her lungs was crisp and cold, although spring stalked the land now. All the way up the mountain, boulders of mottled gray and black jutted up through the pristine snow, and even the sea ice behind her was breaking up. There were large stretches of cold, clear water between the floating islands of white, and she had been forced to swim more than once before she had at last reached the shore.
Now that Desna was on firm ground, she felt like she was in danger of melting. Hot lust flooded her body, incited by the nearness of her mate. Her body was primed to accept him, to welcome his large cock as he drove it into her. Although she had lost count of how many times Karpok had taken her, she still couldn’t get enough of him.
