Coulter's Corners Book One

Lydia Miller answered God’s calling to become a nurse and tended wounded soldiers during the War Between the States. In peacetime, she followed her brother to California where he opened a medical practice in a small town. The isolating life on the frontier brings her to her knees. She desperately wants to share her life with a husband, but every man in Coulter’s Corners has already written her off as an old maid. After praying for a helpmate, she is shocked when Travis is carried to her door. Society thinks an interracial relationship is scandalous. Does she have the courage to trust in a higher plan?

Travis Sorrell, an ex-buffalo soldier, follows his friend and former commanding officer, Daniel Garrett, to California. Garrett takes the job as sheriff of Coulter’s Corners and when the bank is robbed he deputizes Travis and his brother to pursue the outlaws. In the confrontation, Travis is wounded and is brought to the doctor’s house. With the doctor away on business, Miss Miller is left to tend him alone.

She is a beautiful breath of fresh determined to heal him body and soul. His feelings for her deepen, but with racial tensions still running high dare he hope for more?

Excerpt:
“Are you all right, Mr. Sorrell?” The lilt of her voice floated in the air like a bird’s song.

“Yes, just tired,” he replied. Despite the early hour, she wore her black uniform dress again. Was she worried to be seen with him in something more feminine? The basic black dress reminded him of a widow’s weeds, not something a lovely woman should wear. “Did you sleep in that dress?”

She propped her hands on her hips. “Of course not.”

“I much preferred seeing you in your night rail.”

She blushed a deep red. “Desperate times called for desperate measures, but you best forget that image, Mr. Sorrell.” Her voice hardened, matching the stiffness of her posture. “I have my reputation to consider.”

“I understand.” He shouldn’t push her, considering they couldn’t marry. She looked so cute all flustered, though, he couldn’t help himself. “It is a pity.”

Her eyes narrowed, embarrassment deepening to anger. “What is a pity?”

“That you’re wasting your life away assisting your brother when you should be starting a family.”

She let out a sigh so deep it tugged at his heart. “I’m twenty-eight. An old maid. I chose to be a nurse. I find the profession fulfilling.”

Her words rang hollow to his ears. From her somber expression, she didn’t appear to be convincing herself either.

“Well, in that case, thank you. If you hadn’t had chosen the nursing profession, I’m not sure what would have happened to me last night.”

“You’re very welcome.” She shifted her weight from her left foot to her right. Their conversation was making her clearly uncomfortable. “If you don’t need anything, I’ll make us some breakfast.”

He couldn’t think of what to say. After waiting for a response, and not receiving any, she faced the door to leave.

“Miss Miller,” he called.

She paused and looked over her shoulder. “Yes?”

“I am twenty-eight myself. If you’re an old maid then I’m an old man.” He chuckled. “And I think you’re the prettiest old maid I’ve ever seen.”

Her lips twisted into a smile. She looked so much younger when she smiled. He vowed to make her smile often. He’d brighten her days while he recovered.

Yes, making her happy, even making her laugh, would be how he’d repay her for tending to him. When she wasn’t smiling she looked downright dour. Did she have demons in her past, too?

He reached over to the chair and picked up his revolver. The familiar weight in his hand calmed him as if it were a security blanket. Demons real or imagined, he’d vanquish them.

The Hays brothers were at the top of his list.
