Drinking Partners
by Allie Ritch
Vampire Territory Book One

Drinking PartnersBeing the master vampire for the Mid-Atlantic Territory is a tough job. Between the Human Rebellion trying to kill him with poisonous suicide donors and snobby born vampires bucking his authority, Lucas Thane has his hands full. What he needs is a regular drinking partner to feed from and a bigger power block. He finds both in the form of Alexandra Gage, the master of the territory south of his.

Alex could use a little help herself, but she has no intention of letting Lucas take over. Turned into a vampire against her will, she has had enough control taken from her. She’ll never let Lucas usurp her right to rule, but will she let him steal her heart? Passion ignites between them, and it’s amazing what vampire bodies can do.

Excerpt:
The weapon holsters at her shoulder and waistband were the first to go. He’d never divested a woman of such accessories before and found the experience oddly titillating. Her machete was perfect if she wanted to cultivate an image from a human horror movie. He remembered the way she’d stared at the sword in the shop window, though. Perhaps she’d prefer something with a little more style? Her firearm was certainly no-nonsense. The SIG Pro she’d used earlier was lightweight and effective, though the grip on it looked a little big for her hand. It was probably the best piece for her compared to the larger S&Ws and Glocks.

Then came the jacket. The hiss of the zipper sounded like a tease, though what followed was an awkward juggling act to peel her out of the wet material. When that was accomplished, she toed off her black sneakers and undid her fly. Her jeans were on the loose side and only caught at her knees a brief moment before they fell away. The pants hadn’t done justice to her shapely legs. From what he could see so far, she had curves in all the right places, from her rounded hips to her tight calves.

Removing her T-shirt proved the most difficult. She grabbed the hem and started to lift it, but then she groaned and let it drop. He watched her make the attempt twice more before he released a growl of impatience.

“The shirt is ruined, right?”

She looked down at the soaked garment like it was her mortal enemy. “I’d say so.”

“Then let’s make this easy.” Although he knew it might scare her, he went with the most painless method.

He left her to her own balance for the few seconds it took to grab the neckline and rend the shirt in two with one quick tug. She visibly flinched at the ripping sound and would have stumbled into the bed if he hadn’t caught her again. He didn’t stop. Instead he kept his movements smooth and efficient so she wouldn’t have time to panic. He pulled her tattered shirt the rest of the way off before she could catch the material in her fist.

She wore black panties and a black bra underneath. Modern undergarments were one of the innovations Lucas savored most, and Alex filled hers to perfection. Like everything else she wore, there were no embellishments—no lace or bows or trim. Both articles were plain, though the bra crossed in back and had the logo for an athletic company on it. It was what was cupped inside that held him captivated. Her breasts were not too big and not too small. They were the right proportion for her frame and for his suddenly itchy palms.

He had to force himself to quit staring. Whatever else he’d become since he’d been turned into a vampire, he’d been raised a gentleman. Right now, Alex needed his help, not his lust, though he couldn’t pretend he was a eunuch…

“Let’s see if you beat my record. The most bullet wounds I’ve ever had at a time was six.”

He started with the injury in her shoulder, checking front and back to make sure the bullet had passed clean through.

She continued to regard him closely. “How did you manage that?”

“It was a six-shooter. Or a revolver as you’d call it now. The vampire who shot me was old and stuck in his ways. He hadn’t made the change to a semi-automatic. If he had, I suppose I could have claimed a better number. Then again, I could have done worse if he’d used a musket.” He ignored, for the most part, the rapid rise and fall of her bosom as he examined the hole under her arm.

“You have a very dry sense of humor.”

“Most people would call it ‘dark,’ but yes.”

She let out a short laugh and winced. “I assume the guy shot you during your takeover of the Mid-Atlantic Territory?”

“Good guess, but no. At the time, I already had plans to challenge the previous master, but I wasn’t ready to put them into action yet. Zander and I were doing a little reconnaissance, getting a feel for the area and what steps needed to be taken to protect the border to the Northeastern Territory. One of the local vampires caught me and took exception to my presence.”

“And shot you six times. Did your friend rescue you?”

Lucas looked up, having finished his inspection. He felt his lips spread in a smile. “Zander expedited. I hate to disappoint you, but you’ve only been shot five times.”

“Damn.”

He chuckled. “Better luck next time.”
