In Season by Allie Ritch
Children of Nanook Book Two

In SeasonAll Gilby wants is to find a female who will spend the mating season with him. Yes, he’s short. And yes, he talks too much and doesn’t often watch what he says. But he has a lot to offer.

Rejected by her fellow shifters because she can’t change into a frost bear, Miksa travels to the clawless people’s village to look for a mate. With his sexy scent and good humor, could Gilby be the male for her? Can he help her unlock the magic that will let her shift?

Love comes in all different shapes and sizes, and sometimes it even has claws.

And also in this volume is the bonus story “Breeding Season.” For the Children of Nanook—shifters who can take the form of the deadly frost bear—passions run high during breeding season. Desna has already chosen the mate of her heart, but can Karpok defeat the male who wants to take her from him?

Note: Previously published by Liquid Silver Books in July 2013. This work has been revised and re-edited. The short story “Breeding Season” has previously been released in anthologies.

Excerpt:
The thick odor of alcohol nearly sent Miksa staggering back out the door. Although she was unable to transform into a frost bear like the rest of her kind, her senses were as sharp as any other Child of Nanook. She didn’t know how the clawless villagers tolerated the smell of the fermented drinks, let alone consumed them. If she was going to make a life here, she supposed she’d have to get used to it.

She took shallow breaths as she glanced around the tavern. Her heart pounded so hard she couldn’t hear anything above the blood rushing in her ears, but she wouldn’t let these people see how nervous she was. She’d come here for a purpose, and she refused to lose her courage.

With a deliberate tilt of her chin, she looked at the males of the room without really seeing them. She would have preferred to use her nose, but she didn’t dare inhale enough to catch their scents.

“I’ve come for a mate,” she announced.

Miksa deemed it best to deliver a clear statement of her intent. Having done so, she braced herself for their reaction. Would they reject her like her own kind had? Or would the males fight over her? The civilized woman in her didn’t want to instigate a fight, but the part of her that was a frost bear would have enjoyed the show of strength and the evidence of her desirability.

When nobody moved or spoke, her tension mounted until her muscles quivered from the strain. She resisted the instinct to flee when they simply stared at her, though at least none of them bared their teeth. Perhaps this wasn’t how clawless villagers handled finding a mate?

Miksa had thought coming here was the answer. A couple of seasons back, she’d met Shila while the other shifter had been out roaming. Shila had recognized her even though the two of them hadn’t seen each other for a long time and had never been close. The female had told Miksa about her mating to a clawless man—the big, dark-haired fellow whom Miksa now spotted a short distance in front of her. Shila had then gone on to explain the tradition of the villagers here.

As Miksa understood it, she could try mating with one of the local men through the winter and finally feel what it was like to take a male. If she didn’t enjoy the experience or found her partner lacking, she was then free to leave when the mating season was over. It had sounded like the perfect opportunity.

Except no one responded to her announcement. The people in the room were frozen like startled prey, at least until one man elbowed his way past the others and stepped forward.

“I’ll mate with you,” he said.

Miksa almost dismissed him. He was too small to appeal to the bear in her that wanted a large, powerful mate. Something about the way he looked at her made her take a second glance, though. The hunger and boldness in his brown eyes belonged to a mature male, and his grin invited her to smile back. His teeth were in good condition, and his chin and cheeks showed the shadow of a beard. If he let it grow, his facial hair would be the same color as the wavy locks that reached his nape—like tree bark kissed by the morning sun.

When she studied him closely, she also noticed his shoulders were wide in proportion to his trim waist. She wished to see more, but the rest of his body was concealed by his clothes. He met her stare with such open appraisal he made something flutter in the pit of her stomach.

“I’m Gilby,” he said.
