Of course, we didn’t know any Drakonae had made it through the Veil, either. Supernatural history was mostly passed down orally, and a lot had been lost over the millennia. Plus, most species tended to only teach their children about their history. My parents had only passed along history and legends that belonged to the Lycan race.

According to the stories I’d heard, the Lycans had been one of the very first species to explore the Earth side of the portal gate.

A light footfall on the eve of the rooftop outside Charlotte’s bedroom window raised my hackles. Travis snored lightly on the opposite side of the bed, spooning Charlotte with a hand tucked possessively over her hip.

I raised my head and studied the night sky through the half-covered window. The footfall was strange. No one was awake in the lodge. No one had moved around the lodge in several hours. I certainly would’ve heard if someone had exited the building. The doors weren’t exactly quiet.

A second later, I squinted when a red light passed through my gaze. Then a red dot flickered on my bare chest.

Fuck. The thought crossed my mind just as pain exploded inside my chest, and the sound of a shattering window brought me to high alert. I gasped for air and roared, anger driving my beast quickly from its relaxed state to yanking at the leash begging to spill blood.

Charlotte sat up between us and shrieked.
