“I don’t want you anymore.”

Startled, Alexis caught the glass of iced tea before it fell out of her hand and hit the floor. Alexis couldn’t believe he was doing this now, on their date night, in the middle of Thursday’s, in front of everyone. This was the first date night they’d managed to fit in for weeks. Alexis suddenly realized that wasn’t a coincidence. The bastard had started dumping her weeks ago. Taking a deep breath, reaching for strength from an unfamiliar place, she looked up into blue eyes and watched the lips that had brought her so much pleasure repeat the words.

“We can’t be together.”

Licking her lips, she began to say something, anything that would help make sense of the craziness spewing from Sean’s mouth. The word why was forming on hers when he held his hand up, stopping Alexis before she could speak.

“It’s been fun while it lasted, but I need to be with someone like me.”

His cold words stabbed my withered heart. Someone like him. So she was a freaking loser because she wasn’t Native American?

“There’s no need to drag this out, Alexis,” Sean continued shooting more ice missiles in her heart. “I just can’t do this with you anymore. I shouldn’t have let it go on this long.”

Before she could lift her hand to slap the sense back into him, he got up and left. Sick with embarrassment and humiliation, Alexis glanced around to see if anyone else had witnessed her complete and utter humiliation. Her eyes met one of the waitresses, snickering as she walked by. A couple of guys had their heads turned toward the booth she was at and quickly turned around when her eyes met theirs. The waitress placed the food down and left as quickly as she had come.

Taking a deep breath, Alexis swallowed forcing back tears. She wouldn’t break down in front of these people. With shaking hands, she placed some bills on the table and stood up. Throwing her hood over her head, she turned and walked blindly toward the restaurant entrance.

Once outside, the enormity of the situation hit Alexis. She’d just been dumped because she of her race.

Walking aimlessly through the parking lot, Alexis trusted her feet to carry her to the safety of her car. She didn’t feel the icy raindrops hitting her face. She didn’t feel the way hot tears mingled with their cold wetness, forming a warm path on her face. She just felt empty.

Tears began to blur her vision and she walked straight into a cold solid object. Using a still shaky hand to wipe her eyes, she regained her balance and stared at her blue Honda civic. With trembling hands, Alexis reached into her pocket and pulled her car keys out of the tight jeans meant to entice and attempted to stick them into the lock. Unsuccessful, she watched as they hit the wet ground.

In a trance she bent, and after three more attempts, picked up the keys and unlocked the car door. Numbly she got in and started the car then drove home in a daze.

Walking into her apartment, she closed the door and turned to face the picture of her and Sean laughing, in what she thought was love, smiling at the camera. A wail echoed through the room. Startled at the raw sound Alexis leaned back against the door and slid to the floor as fresh hot tears she could no longer hold poured from her eyes. Taking a deep breath to gain control, she was helpless to block the moans escaping.

Minutes or hours later she opened my eyes. She was still sitting on the floor. Alexis’s head felt like it had been slammed against the door repeatedly. Gingerly she touched her tender, puffy eyes and felt the stickiness of old tears her face. Releasing a deep breath, her eyes filled again. As they streamed Alexis began planning a future, a future without Sean and definitely away from East Brook.
