My home is now a crime scene. Several teams show up to begin gathering evidence. I know I’ll have to head down to the station to give my statement, but I can barely think right now.
Thankfully, Drew shows up the same time as the investigators.
"Are you okay?" he asks as he gives me a strong hug.
"I...I don’t know yet," I honestly reply.
"You must be in shock."
Drew gives me another hug then wraps a blanket over my shoulders. I hear him begin to talk with one of the investigators, leaving me alone on the porch. The only thing I could do is stare over at the rose bushes that Aiden planted a few weeks ago. To my surprise, Scott Jordan takes a knee on the other side of me on the porch.
"How are you holding up, Carter?" Scott tenderly asks.
"Aiden’s...really gone."
"Yes."
"Have you been assigned to find his killer?" My eyes swing up to meet his.
"Yes."
"Don’t let me down for once," I respond.
"Let this be the first." Scott nods, his eyes shining with intensity.
