Excerpt:
All alone with Jason, Sadie stumbled to keep up with his pace as he ushered her toward the exit. The heels she wore made it difficult to walk. “Why are you in such a hurry?”

“I want to get you home before you make a complete fool of yourself.” He propelled her toward the revolving glass doors at the front of the hotel. “Just to satisfy my curiosity, how many martinis did you have before I got here?”

Sadie jerked her arm from his grasp. “I’m insulted if you think a couple glasses of alcohol would make me smashed. I’ll have you know I can drink you under the table.”

“Oh, you can, can you? You’ll have to prove it sometime, but right now we need to get you home.” He wrapped his arms around her from behind as she spun toward the hotel elevators. “And just where do you think you’re going?”

“Up to my room, of course.” She pointed to the ceiling above her head. “Where else?”

“You rented a room for the night?” Jason looked as if he had just tasted something gone bad.

She shrugged her shoulders at his sick expression and rifled through her purse for the keycard. “Now, where did I put that key?”

“You really were serious, weren’t you?”

“It’s in here somewhere.” She pushed aside the newly purchased boxes of assorted size and flavors of condoms and assorted cosmetics cluttering up her purse. “I distinctly remember putting the key in here before coming down to the lounge.”

“Maybe you just imagined you rented a room?” Jason leaned forward to peer into her purse and choked. “Hell, Sadie! Were you planning to sleep with an entire football team?”

“No, I bought stock in latex.” She turned her back to him and continued searching her purse.

“Aha!” Her key was under a mound of chewing gum wrappers and she pulled it out triumphantly. “I told you I got a room. See? I have the key to prove it.” She brought the card to her face and squinted at the numbers. “I can’t remember which room it is though.”

“Here, give that to me.” Jason took the card from her hands and read the room number written at the bottom. “Come on. I’ll get you to your room.”

“Thank you.”

Since he couldn’t carry her through the lobby, she linked their fingers together and hoped she could manage walking on her own. She stumbled a few times but, amazingly enough, stayed on her feet until they reached the elevators.

While they waited, Sadie snuggled against his side and purred. “You smell good.”

The hand holding hers tightened. She looked up to tell him he was hurting her, but her comment was left unsaid when she saw the expression on his face. Jason’s gaze had rolled to the ceiling. From the artery pounding in his neck, she knew he was upset. What had she done now?

Although still tense, he did loosen his tight grip. Flexing her fingers, she looked down at her feet at the same time the elevator doors opened. Without a word Jason ushered them inside and punched the button for the tenth floor. He steered her toward one wall, backing away.

She took a step closer to him. He automatically took one back. She did it again, and he repeated the action. She stepped forward a third time, trapping him. He couldn’t get any distance between them unless he physically pushed her aside.

He backed himself against the wall and eyed her warily. She planted her hands on her hips and huffed. “How do you expect us to have sex if you can’t stand to be near me?”
