Sierra Pride Book Eight

Starla Fournier never thought she’d see her loved ones again, and that included Rourke Mackenzie, her childhood friend. Plagued by guilt and shame from the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, she’s finally reunited with her family. The reunion is tainted by the knowledge that her adoptive pride is anxious for her return. Worst of all, seeing Rourke after all these years will make her question arrangements that have already been set in motion—arrangements that will interfere with their chance to be together.

A wolf shifter, Rourke Mackenzie has spent the last eighteen years trying to forget Starla. He finds absolution in the flames he battles as a firefighter, in the bottom of a bottle, and in the arms of a long string of one-night-stands. When he finally sees Starla again, the wolf inside of him wants nothing more than to claim her as his, but his human side can’t ignore the betrayal of her disappearance. Just when he thinks they’ll be able to resolve their differences, a dangerous shifter steps forward to claim her. Rourke will have to act fast in order to protect his mate.

This is the final installment of the Sierra Pride series.

Fierce Lover Excerpt:
She spotted the Hello Kitty lunchbox on her nightstand. Rourke’s letters. This was the friend she had missed, pined for. This was the real Rourke, not that angry imposter outside who wouldn’t even hug her back. She found that, more than anything, she needed to remember him as he was, as he still should be.

She flicked open the latch of the lunch box. She pulled out the top letter—the last one he’d sent her. She remembered waiting for this one especially, because she hoped he’d answer her last question, which had been Do you have a girlfriend?

Opening the folded page, she felt like a girl again. The faint scent of Rourke wafted up—hazelnut and coffee. She hadn’t forgotten, exactly, but she hadn’t allowed herself to think of how he smelled. She grinned. Childhood crushes were powerful; this probably explained why she preferred her coffee with a dash of hazelnut syrup.

Too bad he hadn’t smelled like any of that when she saw him a few minutes ago. He’d smelled like smoke and anger, nothing else. Further proof he wasn’t the boy he used to be.

She looked down at the letter again. His answer had delighted her eleven-year-old self. She traced the scrawled letters with a fingertip. I’m not interested in anyone around here. She wondered if it was still true, and cursed herself for caring.

Heavy footsteps sounded in the hallway, probably one of the brothers searching for a free bathroom. The footsteps stopped outside her door for a half-beat, and then Rourke walked in.

Sierra Pride Book Seven

Cora Fournier can’t seem to get out from under her family’s watchful eye. Granted, her whole stint in captivity with the Nevada Pride has made everyone feel a mite overprotective of her. Fierce Survivor Excerpt:
Cora looked down. Yeah, she did remember it. Tyler had made some kind of pasta, and they’d played a bunch of old games she used to play with her siblings—Crazy Eights, Go Fish, War. “The power went out that weekend,” she said. “There was some kind of storm.”

She remembered his face, smiling in the candlelight, and the way he’d looked at her, as if he was happy because she was around. He hadn’t been asking anything of her body, he hadn’t been looking for favors or promises. It had been the most relaxed she’d ever felt at the ranch.

They’d polished off a bottle of Jerome’s best whiskey, Tyler assuring her that Jerome wouldn’t mind. Tyler had somehow gotten her middle name from her, and started calling her Cora Belle. He’d turned it into some ballad and sang it to her. “Cora Belle, Cora Belle, won’t you be miiiine.”

“Stop, stop!” Cora had said, covering her ears.

They’d collapsed into giggles. Although Cora had pretended to hate Tyler’s singing, she secretly felt exhilarated.
The end of the night had been a blur. She thought maybe they’d almost kissed, but Tyler had said something about sobriety and being a gentleman, and he’d tucked Cora in, barely touching her.

Sierra Pride Book Six

Justine Fournier has worked hard to gain the trust of the Corona Pride. Because they’ve been burned by espionage in the past, she needs to be especially tactful when hunting for clues to her sister’s disappearance. But the eldest brother’s return interferes with her snooping—Mateo watches her every move, and he asks too many questions. Homesick for her own pride, she struggles to convince herself that the all-encompassing, slow-burn attraction she feels for Mateo is merely pesky and, most likely, fleeting.

Mateo Corona can tell that Justine is up to something. Following her around to confirm his suspicions isn’t exactly a hardship—he’d follow her cute little butt pretty much anywhere. Control has always been his motto, but he thinks Justine’s trying to steal his control along with his family’s wealth. Even worse, she’s also stealing his heart.

Fierce Informer Excerpt:
When he reached the entryway again, a young woman was dusting the guest services counter. Her brown hair was plain and fell around her face, and her jeans were ripped in the knee. He wondered why his mother would hire someone who looked so unkempt. A broom and dustpan were leaning against the wall behind her.

“Hey,” he said, pointing to some clumps of dried mud on the floor, “you missed a spot over here. When you sweep, make sure you get that, okay?”

She looked up, and he gasped. Her eyes were the deepest, most perfect blue he’d ever seen. She grabbed the broom behind her and, smiling sweetly, approached him.

As she got closer, he picked up her scent. Something wild and woodsy and distinctly mountain lion.

Shit, she wasn’t a human maid. She was an Exchange—a prized female shifter from another pride. That would explain her clothes—Exchanges could dress how they wanted, provided they wore something related to the resort while they were working.

“You made that mess when you came in,” she said, thrusting the broom so hard at him, he had no choice but to take it. “You clean it up, asshole.”

With that, she stalked away, not toward the family stairs, but the wing of older rooms, where Exchanges and other visiting shifters were usually housed.

He stared dumbly at the broom in his hands.

Rafe emerged from the office and laughed at the sight of Mateo. “Guess my girlfriend handed your balls to you, huh?”

“Girlfriend?” Mateo asked.

Rafe nodded, still wearing that shit-eating grin. “Justine and I have been happily together practically since she got here. Too bad you had to go hide at Corona Valley, or maybe you would have had a chance with her.”

Fierce Dancer Excerpt:
He frowned, and she knew that now she’d do anything to get a reaction out of him. The song changed to her signature, “Hot Sexy Player,” and she removed her top the rest of the way.

She knew her breasts weren’t huge, but she’d always liked them, and she’d ignored the owners of the Lollipop Lounge when they said, at first, that she was too small. They had changed their minds when they saw her dance, of course.

It was nice to see Quentin thought she was perfect, too. His mouth was open enough she could see the tops of his lower teeth, and she again traced the edge of her bra. He moved his legs, probably trying to get more comfortable. Finally she was having an effect on him. His eyes were riveted to her chest, and he licked his lips.

Dammit if she wasn’t getting turned on, too.

No, the point here was to torture him, not herself. Then she caught sight of his hot gaze and the way it raked over her body. She grinned. It was worth it. This would all be worth it. Punishment lap dance—he’d be sorry.

Fierce Player Excerpt:
“I’m Maverick.” He held out his hand, even though she was already twenty feet away from the front desk where he stood.

She stared at him for a long moment, and he forgot how to breathe. Finally, she came trotting over. “Kate,” she said. “Phone abuser.”

“Mav,” he answered. “Library warden.”

She laughed, and he wished he could bottle the sound of it to save for later. They shook hands, and a zing of powerful heat went through his arm, straight to his heart. A connection was here between them. There was something about her; he hadn’t been imagining anything.

“Sorry I came off like such an asshole on Friday,” he said.

“I was an asshole, too.”

“I’m not usually an asshole,” he said.

She laughed. “I am.”

“I don’t believe it.”

“Well, you don’t know me, then.”

Now she was frowning and looking thoughtful, and maybe a little sad. Maverick didn’t know what to say.

“Anyway, I should get to work,” she said.

“Can I have your number?” he asked. “I mean.” He coughed. He’d sort of blurted that out, but, “Yeah. I meant what I said. Can I have your phone number?”

Her eyes brightened when she smiled, and her neck got pink. “Yeah, okay.”

He handed her his phone and she tapped at the number pad. “Kate-astrophe?” he asked.

“Yeah, it’s a gaming thing. There,” she said, handing the phone back. “So, are you hanging around for Thanksgiving?”

“For a couple more days, maybe,” he said. “You?”

“Yeah. My mom’s busy with work, and I could’ve gone to my friend’s, but her girlfriend is going to meet her parents for the first time, and everyone’s super stressed. I did not want to see that show firsthand, you know?”

“Better to give moral support from the safety of a phone call later,” he agreed.

“Exactly.”

“I bet you a coffee and a scone that it doesn’t turn out as bad as everyone’s worried about.”

“How are we going to quantify ‘bad’ and ‘good’ in this scenario, and what everyone’s fears are?”

“Probably a one to ten scale.”

“And you trust me to give you the honest results?”

“Yeah,” he said, feeling like he’d never spoken a bigger truth, “I trust you.”

“So that one to ten scale,” she said. “Is it like, one is easy-breezy, and the parents fall in love with the girlfriend and want her to come for Christmas, too?”

“Right. And ten is that they not only kick out the girlfriend, but their daughter as well.”

“That’s horrible.” She looked aghast. “I can’t believe you’d even joke about something like that.”

He backed up a step. “I meant, um, shit.”

She laughed, then, and if she’d been one of his brothers he’d have picked her up and thrown her down for a wrestling match. It was still tempting. He put his hands behind his back.

Fierce Protector Excerpt:
She leaned back in shock when she saw a tanned bare foot next to her, and she followed it up to a naked leg. Scrambling back on all fours, she took in the entire man standing in front of her. He didn’t look crazy. He looked good, actually, and he watched her with a faint trace of amusement on his lightly stubbled face.

But only a truly insane person would be hiking around in the wilderness, completely naked.

She forced her gaze away from his penis and back up to his face. “Take whatever you want,” she said. “Please, let me be. I’ll go back to town and never say a word about you.”

He shook his head. “You already said plenty.”

“Plenty?” What had she said, exactly? That the tracks were strange, there was a man wandering around. “Nobody cares that you’re here. They don’t know it’s you. Seriously, I’ll just—here.” She threw her pack at him. “I’ll go. Take that. I can hike back down the mountain without it.”

She’d hike a lot faster, too, and only have to spend maybe one or two nights without the shelter of her tent.

“I don’t want your pack,” he said. “I want your research.”

“My research?”

“Any and all data you have on the lion you’ve been tracking. Hair samples, molds of tracks, photos. Whatever you’ve got, give it to me. You can keep the pack. I don’t need any of that shit.”

“Um, I think you need something, because in case you haven’t noticed, you don’t have any clothes on.”

He looked down, as if suddenly realizing. “I guess you’re right.”

She waited for him to look distressed or embarrassed, but he met her stare, completely unabashed. What was with this guy?

Fierce Heartbreaker Excerpt:
And how could he leave Ava, when she smelled so sad?

Fuck. He’d left her like that once before. He knocked on her window.

She jumped, her eyes wide until they narrowed in anger. She fumbled with something on the door, trying to open the window, he guessed. He could hear her cursing through the glass. Finally she opened the door.

“What is it, Jude?”

“I wanted to say I’m sorry.”

“Fuck you.” Her eyes flashed in indignation. “I got over that a long time ago.”

“Where’s…your husband?” Jude asked. He knew the asshole’s name, Javier, but he was afraid if he said it, he would growl.

“He’s in Nevada. Working.” She was shaking, and she smelled like her rum and Coke.

“You shouldn’t be driving,” he said. “Let me give you a ride home.”

“I’m fine. Leave me alone.”

“Come on, Ava. You know these roads are dangerous even when you haven’t been drinking.”

“Jude?” she said, her voice too sweet.

“Yeah?” He smiled. Maybe she was caving in.

“Fuck off.”

He closed his eyes and shook his head. He fell for that trick of hers every damn time.

She went to close the door, but he held it open. Her eyes widened in surprise—she probably didn’t expect that kind of strength.

“I can’t let you drive,” he said.

“Not that it’s any of your business, but Rebecca’s picking me up.”

He leaned forward. What was that smell? Beyond her anger and arousal, he smelled— “You have a baby.”

It wasn’t a question, and Ava seemed to sense the power behind his words. Her hands fluttered against the steering wheel. “Yeah. Sort of goes with the whole marriage thing. ‘First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby in the baby carriage.’”

He snorted, and she turned to look at him. “How’d you know, though?”

“I—” He could hardly tell her that he’d scented a child. He leaned farther into her space. She’d probably interpret it as him trying to assert himself, but really, he was looking for a detail he could use. “I saw…the car seat. Behind you.”

He wanted to kill Javier. Always had. But he knew it wasn’t fair. If Ava had found someone to love after Jude, that was her right. It didn’t matter to anyone that Jude would only love her, for the rest of his life, that he’d be stuck on her until he died. He could try to forget all he wanted, in the arms of one woman after another, but every time he came, it was Ava’s face in his mind.

And the thought of her with another man nearly drove him crazy. Another man had planted his seed in her.

He wanted to punch something.

A dark sedan pulled into the parking lot, its lights illuminating Ava’s face. Her skin looked soft, and he could remember what it felt like against his fingertips. Her lips were parted, and he wanted to taste her again, feel them open to his mouth.

“Is that all?” Ava asked, her voice cold.

“Yeah.” No. Of course that wasn’t all. His voice didn’t want to work. It sounded strangled, like he was on the verge of a shift.

“Good,” she said. “My ride’s here.”

Ava got out of her car and pushed past him. Her scent made his cock hard.

“Maybe I’ll see you around,” Jude said.

When she probably thought she was out of earshot, he heard her say, “I sure as hell hope not.”

His inner mountain lion is bored and listless, tired of the routine of hunts, fights, and one-night stands. His first impression of the woman stuck on the side of the road? She’s absolutely gorgeous. Fierce Wanderer Excerpt:
The woman was crazy. She was turned to the side, as if not sure whether to run toward her car or away from it. Blake could smell the fear on her, all the way across the road, and other than how she drove her car to death, there was nothing to be afraid of.

Unless she was afraid of him?

He stopped short before crossing the highway.

True, he was intimidating. Back in high school, punks used to pick fights with him just to prove something. They always lost. Then, when he got older, the same thing would happen in bars. He stopped going to bars. Unfortunate, because in this rural area, a bar was the best place to find women.

But here was a woman right in front of him. Packaged like a gift, even, in a bright blue top and slim-cut jeans. Her curves looked touchable, and her ass looked like it would fit just right in the palms of his hands. He clenched his fists. Get yourself under control.

“Car trouble?” he asked.

“Everything’s fine,” she said. “I can handle it.”

“Like hell you can,” he muttered under his breath. In a handful of loping strides he was across the road. He opened the driver’s side door, reached in, and popped open the hood.

The woman stopped cowering and moved next to him, hands on her hips. She must not have thought he was dangerous anymore.

“Do you often start poking around under a girl’s hood without invitation, or is this a special occasion?”

He looked up from the engine. He could feel his brows pull together in confusion. “You’re stuck here. You need a—”

“A new radiator hose. I know.”

He nodded, trying to keep his eyes on her light blue ones, and away from the deep line formed by her cleavage as she leaned next to him. “So you know cars.”

She rolled her eyes. “Yeah.”

“So what the hell are you doing driving this one in the mountains, alone? The radiator’s easy enough to maintain, you just gotta pay attention to it.” Like a relationship, he thought wryly. Something his brother Jude would be quick to point out.

“Excuse me?”

He had to hold back a smile. If she’d been a mountain lion, her fur would’ve been standing on end. He could imagine it, how she’d snarl and make herself look bigger.

“I was following you so close because I could smell that your engine was overheating. I knew something was wrong.”

“You could smell something wrong with my car?”

An RV was approaching, chugging up the hill, too big for its lane. Blake didn’t think, he just grabbed the woman and dragged her away from the side of the road. She smelled so good, he stopped watching where he was going so he could look at her eyes. They were a faint blue, with flecks of gray.

He lost his balance, and they tumbled into the pine needles.

“Ow!” Her voice sounded more annoyed than hurt.

“Sorry!” he said over the sound of the RV.

The RV rumbled by. The woman was rigid in his arms, with fright or anger, he didn’t know, and he didn’t care. She felt good there, her skin soft. She smelled like wildflowers.

She cleared her throat. “I think I’m safe now.”

“What? Oh.” He let her go and stood up, sorry to lose contact. “Look, my phone’s in my truck. Let’s call someone for you. Highway patrol? A family member? Boyfriend?”

Her scent changed immediately, from flowers to panic. She was afraid of something. What? Highway patrol? Maybe there was a warrant out for her arrest. Her boyfriend? Maybe he was abusive. The woman was a puzzle and damn if he didn’t want to figure her out.
