He licked his lips, still looking earnest. “Sara. We had such a special connection. It was real and it was fantastic. Maybe that’s why I’ve spent so many years yearning for it too. We both knew what it was like, and we lost it. Even though you may not remember yet, it’s somewhere in here.” He reached over and touched my head. “And in there.” He pointed a finger toward my heart.

I was speechless. I stared at Jack, knowing in my heart that he was being honest and truthful. And I was overwhelmed that he understood me so well.

Turning to face me, his eyes burned with intensity. He took my hands in his and said, “I love you Sara Jordan Hamilton, and I’m willing to give you all the desires of your heart, if only you’ll let me. Nothing can take away my love for you. Not time, not distance, not even another husband.”

My heart pounded in my chest and the heat rose up in my face. Silent tears ran down my cheeks and I bit my lip in an attempt to hold back the floodgates.

Jack blinked back his own tears and said, “I’ll do everything I can to get you to remember me, Sara; to come back to me. Whatever it takes and however long; I’ll keep trying. Do you hear me? I’ll never give up.” With a quick nod, he said, “That is true love. Don’t you see it, Sara? Don’t you feel it? I love you with all my heart and I always will.”

As he tried to maintain the illusion of control, I just sat there, frozen by the fire in his words. Finally, pulling away from his grip, I cupped his face with my now trembling hands. “Jack, any woman would be a fool not to fall in love with a man like you. Believe me, I want to remember. I want to know this kind of love more than anything.” I leaned forward to kiss his cheek; he turned his head in an attempt to kiss my mouth. I wanted to give in; I wanted the passion that I was feeling to never end. I wanted it all, but deep down inside, I knew better. I wouldn’t be able to live with the guilt. I had responsibilities; I had made a commitment.
