“I meant what I said earlier.” Sidonie had to reassure Brut that nothing had changed between them because of her earlier, foolish, but strangely freeing admission.

Neither Sid nor Brut had uttered a word since they left the ranch five minutes earlier. She tried to wait him out, but was too antsy and wired to let the silence drag on.

For what seemed like eternity the dreaded quiet in the pickup’s cab went unbroken save for the incessant humming of the engine. At near eleven at night, the boulevards and roads of San Diego remained eerily empty save for the odd street-cleaning truck swishing twin scrubbing brushes over dark, pitted, asphalt.

Though she washed her face, throat, neck, and hands several times, and sprayed fake Obsession into her hair, the acridity from the tear gas still clung to her. The smell lingered in the cab and had her stomach queasy.

Before they left the ranch, Brut had something he called a chemical bath to erase the ‘stink’ of the Jäeger. Sidonie hadn’t noticed any malodorous odor per se about either him or the other alphas. There had been a funky smell, neither pleasant nor disgusting, but not his normal lick-able aroma.

Brut shifted gears and his elbow brushed her forearm laying on the console between the passenger and driver seats. A whiff of his unique fragrance tickled her nostrils. Unable to resist, she inhaled deeply and sighed. The chemical bath had worked. His mouthwatering spicy scent had returned.

Would she get the chance to taste him? To lap every inch of his flesh like he had hers? Had what she said earlier been the catalyst to end their affair?

“That you’re falling in love with me.” He didn’t glance her way and his full mouth flattened.

He might as well have been discussing stomping a cockroach to death. Kill the notion and move on.

Tough. She said it. Wise or not, it was in the open, and he had to either cope or leave. “No. Although I meant that too. What I was referring to was that it’s my burden to bear. You don’t have to worry about it.”

“Make me feel more of a fucking asshole than I do right this second, why don’t you?” He shifted down with such force the cogs grated emitting a squeaky version of an awful chalk-on-the-blackboard noise.

His unleashed fury felt like an open-handed slap to her face. She curled closer to the door and clutched the armrest as if the molded plastic was a life buoy. Outright rejection. What had she expected?
