Two days later at breakfast Bella announced that she was returning to Steve's house. “He can dump most of my things, I don't need them. Since leaving Steve, I don't particularly want any remnants of my old life, but there are a few things I want – sentimental stuff including photographs of my mum and a few bits and pieces.”
“Of course you must get them back. How do you feel at the prospect of meeting Steve again?”
“Oddly enough I don't feel anything. No regret or sadness, not even anger. Just nothing.”
“Good. It would seem then, that after the initial shock, you might not be totally over him, but you've had time to adjust and analyse your relationship with him.”
“Yes, that's it exactly. Anyway, would you mind if I leave after breakfast? I'll call for a taxi and I'll be back in a couple of hours.”
“There'll be no taxi. I'll drive you.”
“That's kind, but I don't want to inconvenience you.”
“Nonsense. It's no trouble at all. And a bit of moral support would be good, wouldn't it? I'll wait in the car and if you're not out of the house in half a hour, I'll come in and get you.”
Bella grinned at the thought. “Thanks James. I really appreciate that.”
“I do have one condition though – you wear an outfit of my choice.”
“That seems reasonable enough.” She noticed the gleam in his eye. “Er … what do you have in mind?”
“You'll find out soon enough,” he said airily. “We'll give the Bentley an outing. It's been sitting in the garage for the past month.”
“You have a Bentley? I'll feel like a film star, rolling up in that.”
She did indeed look like a film star. When Steve peered through the curtains as a gleaming luxurious Bentley purred to a halt outside his house, he was pleasantly surprised when a gorgeous woman stepped out. He was even more surprised when she opened his front gate, walked up the path, and rang the doorbell.
“Could be your lucky day, Stevie boy,” he muttered to himself as he hurtled to the door. “Hi,” he said to the beautiful creature. “What can I do for you?”
She was tall, around 5ft 10, with sleek red hair swept back from her face and piled high on top of her head. Her lips were glossy cherry red, her cheek bones blushed with a subtle tawny brown, and her dark glasses created a slightly mysterious effect. But it wasn't her face he was particularly interested in, but the rest of her. She wore a faux leopard print peplum-style jacket nipped in at the waist, accentuating her wonderfully rounded hips. Her black leather skirt fitted like a second skin, and ended five inches above her knees. She wore a pair of sexy black leather boots, knee-high, with four inch heels. She was stunning.
“Who is it, Steve?” asked a female voice. Helen came into view, wrapped in a grey shapeless dressing gown, a half smoked cigarette protruding from her mouth.
“His wife,” said Bella, removing her dark glasses. “Hello Steve.”
“Fuck me!! Bella? Bella! I didn't recognise you.”
“Clearly. I've come to collect some of my things.”
“Oh.” Steve couldn't take his eyes off her. She no longer looked like his Bella, the meek creature with whom he had spent the last seven years. He couldn't believe the transformation and simply stared in stunned disbelief. “They're in the back bedroom,” he said eventually.
“Go and get them.”
Steve's eyebrows shot up. She'd never spoken to him like that before. Little did he know that she had received some expert coaching from James King the millionaire pervert. “Um. Ok.” He turned and headed up the stairs.
Helen glared at Bella, who gave her a dismissive glance.
“You're welcome to him. You two are meant for each other.”
“Huh. You cocky little bitch,” spat Helen.
“Absolutely.” Bella smiled serenely but her green eyes glinted with newly found confidence tempered with disdain for the woman who had stolen her husband, and the drop-emerald earrings the same colour as her eyes sparkled in their gold setting. “There are nicotine stains on your teeth, Helen. You really should brush more often.”
“Fuck you.” Helen turned and fled into the kitchen, slamming the door loudly behind her.
Steve struggled down the stairs with two suitcases and some black sacks. “It's all here. Er, I suppose I could let you have some of the household items too.”
“You mean the ones I bought?” Her sculpted brows arched derisively.
Steve merely grunted and looked slightly uncomfortable. He was still in shock at the transformation of Bella – not just her appearance, but her whole demeanour.
“Empty the bags,” Bella instructed.
Steve shrugged and tipped the contents out onto the floor in the hallway.
“The cases too.”
“What the hell for?”
“Just do it.”
Frowning, Steve flicked open the cases and emptied the contents out. He watched as Bella extended the toe of her right boot, sifting through the debris. She stooped and retrieved two photograph albums, a jewellery box, a carved wooden owl, and an ancient one-eyed teddy bear. These few possessions in her arms, Bella turned from the doorway and addressed Steve for the last time. “You'll be hearing from my solicitor shortly. I'm divorcing you.”
“Eh? What? Bella, come on … we can still get it together. This thing with Helen - it doesn't mean anything. She doesn't mean anything to me.”
“And you don't mean anything to me. I don't think you ever did. Goodbye, Steve. I hope you get the life you deserve.”
She turned her back on him, leaving him stunned and resentful, and walked out of his life forever. With no regrets.
* * *
Saying goodbye to Steve was cathartic, and a turning point in Bella's life. Godfrey the one-eyed bear was given pride of place in her room at High Moor, along with the wooden owl and photographs of her mother. She resumed her duties as housekeeper and mentally ticked off the days until Wednesday, the occasion of her second appointment.
Since that first encounter, there was a different dynamic between her and James. She learned to understand his gestures and expressions; she studied his bearing - the way he walked, the way he turned his head a certain way, his hand gestures, and that quirky funny thing he did with his eyebrows. She was also fully aware of the simmering desire she felt when he looked at her in a certain way. She relived that first encounter many times, committing every last detail to memory, and at night, her hand would stray between her legs to pleasure herself at the thought of what they had shared together.
She also read extensively. There was an eclectic selection of books in James' study which he gave her permission to delve in to. She selected erotica and BDSM titles, and surfed the internet, greedy for information on dominance and submission. And the more she learned, the more she wanted to experience, recognising that there was a deep need within her that James King would take great pleasure in assuaging. Some things frightened her. Some things she found disturbing. But mostly, the things she read about excited her to boiling point. One thing was absolutely clear – she had a burning desire to serve James King.
They got into the habit of talking after dinner, and she would listen in fascination as he added to her store of knowledge.
“Dominants are diverse creatures,” he told her. “Being a true dominant is a state of being, but there are many so-called Dominants who have no real feelings of care for their submissives. Such people are dangerous, exploitative and selfish.”
“Well you're not like that.”
“Nor will I ever be.”
