He appeared out of nowhere, directly in front of me, and I jammed my foot on the brake. Tires screeched as my car slewed to a halt. His hands landed on the bonnet. I sat back in my seat and stared through the windscreen. He stared back at me. His eyes were amber, shining in the darkness like a cat’s.

“What the hell?”

The sound of my own voice startled me out of that frozen moment of shock. I wrenched the gear stick into reverse, intending to spin the car around and get away from those inhuman eyes.

“Wait, please.”

He spoke with the sort of careful pronunciation learnt from Rosetta Stone. I doubted they did English for...whatever he was, though. Something in his tone, in the way he looked at me, made me hesitate. And in that pause I saw the second man.

Huge and bald, he held the lead of a snarling dog in one hand and a shotgun in the other. He looked human, definitely more so than the amber-eyed stranger still braced on my bonnet, yet he frightened me more. I leaned across the car and pulled the knob up on the passenger door.

“Get in,” I said. “Quickly, before I change my mind.”
