Waking Up Excerpt:
Gordon pulls two dollars out of a pocket and hands them to her over his shoulder. “I saw a Coke machine on the ground floor. Meet me by there with one, please?” For some reason it’s important I know his reasoning. “I drive for the company on weekends,” he tells me.
“Gotcha.” Does Nadine know? I suppose so. I assume he drives in the supply of Coke to her hot dog joint and she, short on candidates, offered to make him a stahhh.
Nadine snatches the money and leaves with a huff, clearly out of her element when she’s not the focus of attention. No sooner does the door snick shut than Gordon Renquist practically passes through my desk to get closer.
“I never slept with Nadine. There’s no way in hell I’m Troy’s dad. No point in sending off that test.”
“I had a feeling.”
He smirks. “I hope you’re thinking I’m choosier when it comes to sexual partners.”
“That’s not a nice thing to say. Nadine’s not bad.”
“Yeah, you’re right.” He sighs. “That was shitty of me.”
I shrug. My script writer’s brain conjures a joke comparing Nadine to bowling shoes, accepting so many men a night, and if I had some time alone I could refine it. It wouldn’t ring true, though. I honestly suspect Nadine leads as quiet and celibate a home life as me. Why else would she push so hard for fame? She has a kid to feed and shelter, and I doubt pushing hot dogs at a pop stand is making enough.
“I’m not thinking anything relevant to your sexual experience.” I lie through my teeth. I’m picturing naked Gordon’s muscular bulk settling nicely on my body, his large hands covering my bare D-cups.
“I barely know Nadine, but I wasn’t about to say no when she asked me to come up.” Deep breath. Worried frown. Expected confession about needing the fast cash for his show appearance or genuinely believing Morton can provide a gateway to Broadway fame, coming in three, two...
“Driving’s not my fulltime gig, I told you I do that on weekends. During the week I work at Embellish doing tats, and I want to pitch a show idea.”
Groan. This I’ve experienced since my first day on the job—the assumption that any peon in the trenches has the authority to greenlight your wacky pitch. I removed all references to GAB from my Facebook profile to end all the private messages from former classmates wanting to send treatments and videos of their children dancing to Beyonce. These same assholes used to sneer at me in the halls and call me Big-Ass Blair. You see, though, chubby people are supposed to suffer short-term memory in later life or otherwise learn to forgive. After all, teens will be teens.
One time, after hearing from the ubiquitous Mean Girl of my senior class, who thought a series revolving around her would enthrall the nation—Look, I’m shopping at Barney’s! Now I’m pontificating about gun control laws—I sent her “audition” video to Morton for grins. Her over-plumped lips and bolt-on tits inspired him to present a special show on plastic surgery gone wrong, and would I ask my friend to participate?
Two years later, I’m still waiting for a response.
