Rookery Rogues Book Three
Once she was beautiful…
Abigail Vautille grew up in the heart of the London rookeries, toiling as a factory worker until one tragic night leaves her disfigured and unable to weave. Faced with starvation or prostitution, she strikes a deal with the rogue who owns her father’s gambling debts—if he excuses the debt, for two weeks, she’ll give him her body, but not her heart.
Once he was charming…
Inspector Michael Strickland of the Metropolitan Police has always had a way with women. Success comes easily to him, and he glides through life on his good looks and family name. But Abigail lights a passion within him he never knew existed. As he gets to know her, he realizes two weeks with her won’t be enough. He sees the beauty within her, not the beast she believes herself to be.
Together, their love is beyond a fairy tale…
Yet Abigail’s scars run more than skin deep. With the end of their agreement so close, can Michael convince Abigail she’s exactly who he wants?

Red was everywhere.
Abigail Vautille shouldn’t have been surprised. Since that fateful day when her left hand was forcibly rammed into the back part of a loom, red had haunted her. Her permanently scarred skin crisscrossed with angry red lines. Her hand had never healed properly, and still her thumb stuck out at sickening angle. Bubbles of flesh remained, torn back to expose her knucklebones. Red was there too. And red was even the hair color of her once-friend, Poppy Knight, whose investigation into their past employer led to Abigail’s torture.
Still, her stomach clenched at the sight of shellacked red door of Cruikshank’s gaming hell. A battered wreath hung in the center, the once-red holly now shriveled and dead. No one bothered to use the black doorknocker. This was no longer a place that required a doorman.
Scoundrels came and went, invited by the new proprietor, Arthur Cruikshank. Prostitutes roamed the halls freely, as long as they gave Cruikshank a cut in their flesh money for the night. Opium addicts, both male and female, lounged in the back room on the second floor.
Abigail was neither an opium addict nor a prostitute, yet she’d been to this gaming hell countless times. She knew the men here, their tells and their compulsions. Each battled a demon that only a hand of cards seemed to sate.
Pushing open the door and entering, she refused to give her cloak to the man who waited by the door. Cruikshank didn’t employ him—when unsuspecting people presented him with their garments, he ran off to resell them in the rag and bone shops. It was a clever trick; one Abigail ought to practice, if it didn’t leave an awful taste in her mouth. Soon, she’d be unable to maintain such scruples. She couldn’t weave any longer, and with her damaged hand she couldn’t perform manual labor.
When she’d been able to hold down a factory job, she’d at least been able to keep the majority of her salary from her father. Now, the money she’d saved was gone to food, rent, and paying his debts.
Her eyes narrowed as she surveyed the crowd mingling in the lower rooms. Conversations drifted in and out, an indiscernible hum. At the end of the red hall, there was a door. One lonely door led to the basement Cruikshank had converted into a brothel.
She didn’t open that door, not today.
